Tackling Litter in Kendal – A Collective Effort

As a resident and a councillor in Kendal, I’ve seen firsthand the impact litter has on our beautiful town. The sight of waste, from plastic wrappers to discarded vapes, not only ruins our streets but also harms the environment in ways we can’t ignore. We need to take action, and that’s exactly what we’re doing with a new campaign aimed at cleaning up Kendal and encouraging more people to take responsibility.

Litter is more than just an eyesore—it’s a serious ecological threat. One of the biggest concerns we face is the amount of rubbish making its way into the River Kent. Dumping waste in the river harms local wildlife, disrupts ecosystems, and impacts water quality. The river is part of what makes Kendal so special, and we can’t afford to let it become a dumping ground.

One issue we’ve seen rise recently is the proliferation of discarded vapes. Not only are these harmful to the environment, but they’re also dangerous to wildlife. The components of vapes, particularly the lithium batteries, are hazardous and can leak toxins into the ground and water. It’s frustrating to see these items left behind in public spaces, contributing to the growing litter problem.

The new scheme that’s launched aims to encourage local residents, community groups, and councillors to step up and tackle this problem together. It’s not just about the businesses—though their involvement is part of the solution—it’s about everyone taking responsibility. The community litter-pick events have already started to gain traction, and I’m proud to see so many locals coming out to help clean up their town. It’s heartening to see residents from all walks of life volunteering their time and energy to make a difference.

This is a campaign that goes beyond just cleaning our streets—it’s about creating a lasting change in the way we think about litter and how we engage with our environment. By working together, we can reduce waste, prevent litter from ending up in our rivers, and ensure that Kendal remains a town we’re proud of.

As a councillor, I’m committed to supporting and encouraging these efforts. The more we come together as a community, the bigger the impact we can have. I encourage everyone to take part in our upcoming litter-pick events, report areas that need attention, and be mindful of how we dispose of waste.

The health of our town, our river, and our planet depends on it. Let’s work together to tackle this issue head-on and make Kendal a cleaner, greener place for all.
